Members of England’s winning 1966 World Cup football team also came along to celebrate the kick-off of this year’s World Cup.

Those teeing off for the Wigley Group Open were also joined by a number of sporting celebrities including 16-time World Darts Champion Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor along with other stars from the worlds of snooker, cricket, and boxing.

All of the proceeds raised will be donated to the Afghanistan Trust which helps to support soldiers and their families who served with The Parachute Regiment in Afghanistan and who have been wounded or killed as a result.

Katie Wigley, marketing and events co-ordinator at the Wigley Group, said: “The event was a fantastic occasion and was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

“It was an action-packed event with a number of sporting celebrities also helping to boost awareness and raise money for a really important cause.

“Last year we raised around £11,000 for the Afghanistan Trust and this year we are delighted to have exceeded expectations having raised over £14,500 for the charity.

“It is important for us to continue to show our support for both the soldiers who have served in Afghanistan and their families.

“Former serviceman Jaco van Gass shared his inspirational story at the gala dinner and we hope the money raised will have a positive impact and help to improve the lives of those who have served in the armed forces.”
