Treetops Makes National Shortlist
Architect’s Treetops transformation makes the shortlist of two national award schemes.
The transformation of a modest 60s home into a modern-day energy efficient family retreat is earning one of the region’s innovative architectural practices, HLP, some serious industry accolades, with the projects shortlisted for a number of highly respected national awards.
Situated in Northumberland, Treetops is the only residential project in the North East to have been be shortlisted in both this year’s Manser Medal and AJ Retrofit Awards.
The property, which has benefited from HLP’s innovative and bespoke approach to design, recently won both a ‘special commendation’ at the regional RICS Renaissance Awards and a regional and best small project at the RIBA awards.
Working to a tight budget, HLP’s brief was to create a modern family home to meet the needs of the 21st Century, has resulted in the reinvention of Treetops, from an over-extended property to an ultra-stylish, clean-line, open plan house of Grand Design stature.
Apart from being warmly received by the owners and the industry, Treetops has also been given the thumbs up by the son of the original architect, William Maddison, who acknowledged that his father would have approved of the transformation.
Speaking about receiving recognition at a national level for its work on Treetops, HLP Director, Jonathan Yates said:
“ We are absolutely delighted that Treetops has received this reaction and looks set to become an national award-winning property. On this particular scheme we have used our extensive experience of designing homes rather than houses and married that with a desire to achieve high environmental/energy efficiency standards without the need to demolish and rebuild.
“Treetops is a wonderful example of how a post-war property can be retained and reinvented to meet the needs of today’s family.”
Both the AJ Retrofit and Manser Medal award ceremonies will take place in London later this year. Treetops is the only north east project to be shortlisted in both award schemes.
