Yorkshire plays host to construction high flyers as region showcases best practice in industry awards

THE construction industry in Yorkshire is getting ready to swap its hard hats for its glad rags as over 350 people from across the region prepare to celebrate the county’s finest at The Constructing Excellence Yorkshire & Humber Awards on Friday 18th July in Sheffield, in preparation for the region being showcased nationally in the capital city later in the year.

The event, which has grown to become one of the most important dates in the industry’s calendar to celebrate the best that the regional built environment sector has to offer, is run by Constructing Excellence Yorkshire and Humber (CEYH) which is delivered via the Centre for Knowledge Exchange (CKE) at Leeds Metropolitan University. The CEYH gathers together key figures in the region to present how they achieve excellence in their work, and this year the awards come to South Yorkshire for the first time, hosted at Sheffield City Hall.

Recognising and rewarding the very best of construction innovation & best practice in the region, along with inspiring new ideas and facilitating knowledge sharing, The Constructing Excellence Awards is multi-faceted. It showcases shortlisted organisations and individuals who will then go on to represent Yorkshire and the Humber at the National Constructing Excellence Awards in London in Autumn and Sheffield has a strong contingent in the shortlist.

’Claire Bowles, Regional Director , Constructing Excellence Yorkshire and Humber said:“The popularity and quality of submissions this year has been second to none reflecting an upturn in our regional construction sector. We wish all of the shortlisted entrants the best of luck on the evening of getting through to the national finals in London in November”.

Dronfield based Henry Boot is one of the shortlisted organisations alongside Sheffield Cathedral Gateway Project, Halifax based Southdale Ltd for it’s the Dudleys project and Yorkshire Water for its Rivelin Water project.

Richard Grafton, Head of Management Services, Henry Boot Construction said: “These nominations are a testament to another strong year for Henry Boot and demonstrates our commitment to the highest standards in all our operations”

The programme for the evening includes government Chief Construction Advisor, Peter Hansford delivering the key note presentation, and the awards being compered by feisty Capital Breakfast DJ JoJo Kelly. In addition the event will feature a networking drinks reception, a three course gourmet meal, after dinner entertainment and we’re told a few surprises will be thrown in too. The event is sponsored by Yorkshire based Kier Group.

Kier Regional Director, Phil Oades, said: “Kier is proud to support the Constructing Excellence in Yorkshire and Humber Awards and help celebrate the great talent and innovative ideas coming out of our local area.

“Our work in Sheffield and across Yorkshire shows us first-hand the importance of the construction industry in the region and the economic investment it generates. We look forward to celebrating with all the winners at the ceremony.”

The evening commences at 1815 with a champagne reception. Tickets are still available via ckeevents@leedsmet.ac.uk or http://constructingexcellenceyh.wordpress.com/ from £65 per head. The event is supporting charity ‘Action for Happiness’ which helps people look after their mental wellbeing and campaigns for mental wellbeing to be given much greater priority - to celebrate this association guests are invited to add a splash of colour to their outfit in honour of the charity to spread the theme of happiness amongst the black tie delegates.
