Armed forces to be honoured at Redcar

Redcar Racecourse is showing its support for the armed services in this centenary year. Its Help for Heroes family raceday on Sunday 20th July will be fully supporting Help for Heroes, the Royal British Legion and the Felix Fund, a bomb disposal charity based in Catterick Garrison.

Thousands of families from across the North East are expected to attend what is set to be a fantastic day in aid of some great causes. Anyone with a warrant card will get free entry into the racecourse on the day in recognition of their service.

As well as seven races on the day, there will be a parade along the racetrack by the armed service standard bearers, which will culminate in a two minute silence to remember all those who have served in the forces. A number of serving and former armed service personnel will be at the event, including members of the Royal Logistics Corps, the Yorkshire Regiment, the Merchant Navy and the Royal Artillery.

The parade will be led by Redcar and Cleveland Councillor Eric Howdon, who is the council’s armed forces champion and was a member of the Royal Army Ordinance Corps, serving in Germany and Singapore.

Eric commented: “This is a very important year for the armed services, being the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War, the 75th anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War and the recent 70th anniversary of the D-Day Landings.

“We know the public will come out in force to support the vital work of the chosen forces charities.”

The charities will be fundraising at Redcar Racecourse, and members of the armed forces attending will have the opportunity to present winning connections with their prizes.

Amy Fair, general manager of Redcar Racecourse commented: “We are really excited for the Help for Heroes family raceday this year. We are very proud to be supporting such good causes, especially the Felix Fund which is local to us.”

The raceday is part of the Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival and all accompanied children aged 17 and under can come racing for free. The racecourse is entertaining its young visitors with bouncy castles, climbing walls, assault courses, lemon tops as well as the Crow’s Fair funfair rides.

For a chance to win VIP tickets the racecourse is also running a forces hero competition on their social media accounts. A winner will be selected from those who nominate their hero, along with a photograph, and will enjoy a day to remember with friends or family.

The remainder of the 2014 season at Redcar has three other feature racedays; Caribbean Carnival Day on Saturday 9th August, Ladies’ & Gents’ evening on Saturday 23rd August, and the famous Two Year Old Trophy on Saturday 4th October.

There are many hospitality options from the Dine & View package in the Crow’s Nest Restaurant, to racegoers’ packages including admission, a racecard, food and drink.

Parties of 10 of more can also save over 20% when they book their Grandstand or Course Enclosure admission tickets in advance.
