Apprentices make their Mark in the Law

Two of Harrogate’s leading law firms have joined the Government’s drive to offer apprenticeships by appointing three young people in the town under the scheme. Local solicitors Raworths and Berwins which are both ranked in the leading independent directory for the legal profession, Chambers and Partners 2015, have taken on Holly Moore, Robyn Sweeney and Robin Poole as part of their administration and property teams. All three are attending Harrogate College as part of their apprenticeship and combining this with their work in the law firms.

Holly Moore joined Raworths having attended Rossett School. She is studying an NVQ in Business Administration which includes the business environment, telephone handling, reception duties, archiving and office equipment. Robyn Sweeney is at Berwins whilst also studying for an NVQ in Business and Administration having attended King James’s School in Knaresborough. Robin Poole is also at Harrogate College studying for an NVQ in Business Administration and is working in Residential Property at Berwins.

The Government is supporting apprenticeships through a number of initiatives including the 100 Day Apprenticeship Challenge which has been running in Yorkshire and the Humber and the North East. The aim is that by 2020 one in five young people will do an apprenticeship, recognising the excellent career prospects this offers them.

Caroline Davidson, Operations Director at Berwins says, “As an employer we are supporting the apprenticeship scheme 100% and we are finding it extremely rewarding. Not only because our apprentices are boosting our productivity and bringing new ideas, but it is great to see young people learn and develop, gain real qualifications and lay the foundations for a successful future.”

Zoe Robinson, managing partner at Raworths says, “The apprenticeship scheme provides real, measurable business benefits by bringing productive, enthusiastic young people into the organisation. We are delighted that this is now part of our ongoing business structure for future growth.”
