Newcastle to benefit from £150 million flood protection scheme

Northumbrian Water has promised to invest £150 million between 2010 - 2015 to help protect areas throughout the region that are prone to flooding.

The firm is to invest £1.75 million to reduce the risk of flooding to 13 properties in Stamfordham Road, Newcastle.

A storm water storage tank, which will hold up to two and a half million litres of waste water during times of heavy rainfall, and 120 metres of new sewer pipe will be installed in land between Stamfordham Road and Chessar Avenue.

The company is also due to begin work later this month on a similar scheme worth £1.4 million in Westerhope, with the aim of protecting another 13 homes at risk of flooding.

Ian Davison, Northumbrian Water’s project manager, said: “Reducing the risk of our customers’ homes and businesses flooding is one of our top priorities as we appreciate the distress and inconvenience that flooding can cause. We also need to ensure that we are prepared for the future as weather patterns change and flash flooding occurs more regularly.

“Our experienced contactors, Seymour Civil Engineering Ltd, will carry out this work on our behalf and residents should be assured that all will be done to keep disruption to a minimum.”

Chris Austin, Northumbrian Water’s project manager, said: “Weather patterns are changing and in the past few years we have seen an increase in flash flooding. This work will not only reduce the risk of properties flooding, but also help us to be prepared for the future as we experience more frequent storms.
