Photography contest launched as iconic cooling towers to be demolished

A leading regional builder has launched a photography competition to capture the moment Didcot’s iconic 325ft cooling towers are brought to the ground in less than 60 seconds.

Persimmon Homes Wessex is looking to celebrate the event, which will happen close to its Great Western Park development at 4am on Sunday July 27.

The demolition process of such a large industrial site, which closed in March 2013 after 43 years of service, is a lengthy and complicated process and work has already begun on some of the smaller buildings, huts and equipment.

Pauline Fletcher, sales and marketing director for Persimmon Homes Wessex, said: “This is quite an historic moment for Didcot and we thought it would be great to capture it for prosperity by launching this photographic competition.

“The cooling towers are of huge significance in the town and many local residents have lived with them all their lives. Whilst many people may well be glad to see them go, it will certainly have a dramatic effect on the landscape.

The closing date for the competition is Friday, August 8, and entries should be sent by email to wesssales@persimmonhomes.com. The winner will be announced on August 11 and will receive a £100 Sainsbury’s voucher.

The demolition work on the defunct power station is being carried out by contractors Coleman and Company and the three towers look set to be flattened in less than a minute.
