St John Ambulance sails into Whitby with new workplace training venue

St John Ambulance has opened a new venue for workplace first aid training courses in the heart of Whitby to train more people to save lives in the seaside town.

The commercial training arm of the nation’s leading first aid charity is now offering businesses in the local community market leading first aid and health and safety courses at the Green Lane Centre. The centre is part of a regeneration project which transformed a former play centre into a business, community and training hub.

Offering a suite of 1,2 and 3 day courses, including First aid at work and requalification, Emergency first aid at work and health and safety sessions, the facilities allow up to 12 people to be trained at each course in a modern and accessible centre with free car parking.

Graham Henry, Regional Director of St John Ambulance’s Commercial Training Division, North East, said: ’The Green Lane Centre is an ideal location to cater for businesses across the North Yorkshire coastal town and will meet demand for our courses in the area.

’Opening a new training venue just minutes from the town centre means that our training courses are more accessible and we hope it will encourage more employers to help their staff learn the skills that can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved.

‘By choosing St John Ambulance as their first aid training provider also helps businesses to contribute to their corporate social responsibility by helping to fund our charitable life saving work and give back to their local communities.’

Graham added: ’In 2012-13, there were 7,260 reported injuries* to workers in Yorkshire and the Humber – 9 per cent of the overall GB total - which illustrates how vital it is for businesses to have appropriately trained first aiders on hand. Even basic first aid awareness can save lives.

‘Importantly, there are numerous examples of people who have been sent on workplace first aid courses only to find their skills have helped them to save the life of a family member, someone in their own community or act confidently in an emergency situation.’

With 26 training venues across the North East, including seven in North Yorkshire, this new facility strengthens the charity’s services to deliver the highest first aid standards in the business with more scheduled courses than any other provider. It also helps local organisations comply with the latest regulations and tailor the right training to specific workplaces.
