Plans to transform old pub into restaurant could create 30 new jobs

Plans have been submitted to convert a former Teesside pub into a restaurant and takeaway in a move which could create 30 new jobs.

The White Rose, on Marton Road in Middlesbrough, is now derelict after being closed for months since its closure in January.

The once-popular pub was sold by then owner Spirit Pub Company in May for its asking price of £375,000.

Now its new owner, local entrepreneur Ali Mourzzam, wants to bring it back to life after applying to Middlesbrough Council for permission to change the use of the building to a restaurant.

As well as ground floor extensions and external alterations, Mr Mourzzam is also asking to run a hot food takeaway from the site.

In his application, he says the proposed restaurant would include a reception areas, space for 144 covers, a staff room, kitchen and toilets.

The application also claims 30 jobs could be created by the development.

Leisure property specialists Fleurets, which handled the sale of the pub in May, said all interest in the pub was on the basis of a short to medium term plan for alternative use.

Fleurets also revealed that of all the pubs sold by the firm in the North-East in 2013, 56% remained pubs and 44% were sold for alternative uses.

A decision on the application is expected by 17th September.
