Top NE golfers invited to battle it out in the English Senior Open

Three of the North East’s biggest names in golf are set to play in a major European tournament at Rockliffe Hall in County Durham this month.

John Harrison, Graeme Bell and Roger Roper have been invited to play in the European Senior Tour English Senior Open being held at Rockliffe Hall on August Bank Holiday Weekend, Friday August 22nd until Sunday August 24th, with a now sold out pro-am tournament being held on the Thursday.

Graeme Bell, from Eaglescliffe Golf Club, recently successfully went through qualifying for the European Senior Open last week at Royal Porthcawl in Wales and finally finished in 46th position.

Graeme will be joined by fellow North East golfers, John Harrison from Matfen and Roger Roper of Rockliffe Hall who will be teeing off with world class players such as former Ryder Cup captains Ian Woosnam OBE, Sam Torrance OBE and Mark James as well as prestigious names including Carl Mason, Costantino Rocca, Barry Lane, Des Smyth, Peter Fowler and Paul Wesselingh, who won last year’s Order of Merit. Steen Tinning will return to defend his title as the winner of last year’s tournament at Rockliffe Hall.

This year’s English Senior Open event follows the success of the 2013 tour, which attracted over 5000 spectators to Rockliffe Hall, and will be the biggest single sporting event in the North East in 2014.

Chairman of Rockliffe Hall, Warwick Brindle, said: “We are delighted to invite three of the most prominent local players to represent the region in the English Senior Open. I am sure their supporters will turn out in large numbers to see them take on ten previous Ryder Cup players including stars like Sam Torrance, Ian Woosnam and Costantino Rocca for this prestigious title.

“This year’s field of players is outstanding and we are really pleased that we have three golfers to represent our region here at Rockliffe Hall.”
