Laptop repairs lessons for Warrington school

Children from Bewsey Lodge Primary School in Warrington have been given a unique insight into the inner workings of laptops and computers, thanks to expert sessions delivered by staff from Flextronics.

Two members of the Flextronics Repairs Team dropped in to the school to teach Year 6 pupils how to dismantle and repair the machines as part of the Children’s University. The scheme is delivered in Warrington through the Warrington Wolves Foundation and provides 7-14-year-olds with exciting and innovative learning activities.

Jon Osbourne, Senior Repairs Team Leader at Flextronics, delivered the lessons together with his colleague Tom Jones.

Jon said: “It was great to see the children start to look at laptops in terms of the parts they are made up of and how it all works. They were really engaged and asked lots of intelligent questions.

“When I was at school, repairs and logistics wasn’t something that was really taught and it certainly wasn’t put forward as a viable career option, so it’s fantastic to be able to go into a school and teach the children something new. Hopefully one or two might now consider it as a future career.”

Flextronics joined forces with the Warrington Wolves Foundation to support the Children’s University initiative last year and Bewsey Lodge is one of a number of local schools involved in the programme.

Bewsey Lodge Year 6 teacher Miss Muia, who sat in on the sessions, said: “I want to say a huge thank you to Tom and Jon for coming in and delivering the two ICT lessons, the children and I enjoyed them immensely.

“Both formed an excellent relationship with the children, keeping them on task and well-behaved throughout. The opportunity for learning that Flextronics provided was perfect for Year 6 and the children are now talking about computers in a completely different way.”

The Children’s University is a national project that offers children their own ‘passport to learning’, encouraging them to spend free time completing activities that count towards nationally recognised awards received for extracurricular learning.
