Lies really do not pay
Although 99 per cent of people in Yorkshire consider themselves to be honest, in fact 83 per cent admit telling an outright lie, stretching the truth or being dishonest up to an average of five times a week, according to a recent study commissioned by comparison website PayingTooMuch.com
But when it comes to insurance, 16 per cent said they had lied, stretched the truth or not declared something in order to either get insurance or while making a claim.
Of those the most common being:
Omitting to tell the insurance company something which could affect their decision or quote – 41 per cent Stretching the truth a little on the application – 33 per cent Lied about what happened when making a claim – 19 per cent Lied outright on the application – 15 per cent Lied about how much things were worth when making a claim – 15 per cent Lied about what was taken/broken/damaged when making a claim – 4 per cent.
Michael Ward, managing director at PayingTooMuch.com which commissioned the survey said, “Those who lie are really putting themselves at risk, either by having their claim turned down when they really need it to be paid so missing out, risking not being able to get cover in the future, or even being prosecuted. Taking such a risk is short sighted and stupid. Remember, insurance companies have heard and seen it all before especially stories around claims.”
