Lancaster architects design new facilities for revamped gastro-pub

Lancaster-based architecture practice Harrison Pitt Architects has helped deliver new hotel facilities for a prominent Lancashire eatery.

Harrison Pitt Architects has overseen the project to transform a derelict floor and neighbouring building of Grade II listed Lancaster-based gastro pub The Borough into a nine-bedroom hotel wing.

It means The Borough can now offer on-site accommodation for wedding parties, tourists and business professionals.

Since opening its doors in May 2014, the hotel has attracted an abundance of tourists and business professionals, generating an average occupancy rate of over 90 per cent.

Martin Horner, who has been director at The Borough since it opened in 2004, said: “The new accommodation has really paid off with the majority of rooms being fully booked since the opening. It has opened up a whole new revenue stream for the business.

“Harrison Pitt’s expertise has enabled us to make best use of the space available while offering a design that is modern yet sympathetic to the original features of the building.”

Richard Parker, architect at Harrison Pitt Architects, said: “The Borough is housed in a beautiful Georgian townhouse so we wanted the design of the rooms to be contemporary but reflect the history of the building.

“We worked closely with Lancaster-based interior designer James Mackie while transforming the rooms to ensure the initial vision ran through to the final result. The hotel is beautiful and so far has been a great success.”

Throughout the project Harrison Pitt worked closely with conservation specialists at Lancaster City Council to maintain the style of the historic structure which was listed as a Grade II building in 1953. The Horner family opened the building as The Borough in 2006.

Spread over three floors, The Borough is an award-winning pub restaurant and hotel, and is the only Michelin recommended eatery in Lancaster.
