Beeline appoints Cloudmark to protect its 56.3 million subscribers in Russia from spam
Cloudmark Inc., the global leader in messaging threat protection for communication service providers, today announced it has been selected by Russian mobile operator, VimpelCom, working under the Beeline brand, to provide its subscribers with the industry’s fastest and most accurate spam, phishing and virus protection.
Cloudmark’s messaging security software will protect Beeline’s 56.3 million mobile customers from spam, phishing and malware attacks across email, SMS, and MMS. Using Cloudmark’s carrier-grade filtering engine, Cloudmark Authority, and high-performance botnet monitoring, alerting and remediation platform, Cloudmark Security Platform, Beeline aims to increase customer traction and provide additional value to existing customers.
Since Cloudmark’s solution has been implemented, Beeline subscribers are receiving up to 12 times less spam – just one spam SMS per month per subscriber.
Cloudmark CTO Neil Cook explains: “As one of three largest operators in Russia, Beeline needed a solution that could adhere to its sophisticated technical requirements. This is largely due to a complex Russian spam landscape, where government and customers are placing increasing pressure on mobile operators to reduce spam. Particularly, recent examples of spam in Russia include fraudulent phishing, such as messages that appear to have come from official sources like Visa, and loan scams, such as pay day loan spam, targeting people struggling to pay their day to day living costs. These scams use complex techniques to avoid detection and blocking, requiring advanced controls to counter these threats, which Cloudmark is uniquely positioned to provide.

“We have created a solution that offers unrivalled flexibility and a unique approach to spam protection that enables Beeline to meet the needs of this landscape. Our solution uses intelligent algorithms to monitor the network, including monitoring mailing addresses from external networks. Cloudmark’s intelligent anti-spam platform integrates several tools designed to recognise spam and alert the operator, with an adaptive mechanism that identifies anything from standard spam to complex and distributed attacks.”
Cloudmark is working with local partner Lanit, Russia’s largest systems integrator, to implement, deliver and support this project. Cloudmark’s Mobile Messaging Security solution is also fully integrated with Openmind Solutions, a key technological partner on this project. With this technological integration Cloudmark and Openmind offer the unique capability to secure all operator messaging with a common interface and policy.
Alexey Nazarov, Implementation Solutions Director, Marketing Business, at Beeline, says: “Since November 2013, we have waged a tough fight against those who are sending millions of unwanted SMS spam to our subscribers.
“The nature and format of this spam is constantly changing and so we needed to implement a solution that would be able to respond quickly to latest revisions and new threats to protect our subscribers from the annoying and often dangerous SMS threats coming through from other mobile networks. It forms a key part of our promise to protect and care for our customers.
“Since the first phase of implementation, we have been able to drastically reduce the amount of spam, and we will continue to work with Cloudmark to ensure customers feel as confident as possible when using our services.”
