North East architect partners with Newcastle University in major building project

Newcastle City Council has granted planning permission for the demolition and replacement of Newcastle University’ Line East Building with a new four storey building

The INTO Pathway centre, which faces Haymarket metro centre, was completed in 2012 by FaulknerBrowns Architects.

The firm has announced plans to demolish the existing Line East Building and build a four storey building to match the modern-style of the INTO building.

The project will also involve a renovation of the Crows Nest pub, which is currently attached to the Line East Building on the upper two floors and is owned by the university.

In the project brief, the architect states: “Both buildings have been used in the past by the

University for teaching, however in recent years they have been under-utilised as they have become obsolete and better accommodation has been made available elsewhere on the campus.

“The proposed development would therefore not only solve the increased accommodation requirements of INTO, it would also seek to reinvigorate and bring back into intensive use this part of the campus.”

“It is felt that the most practical solution would be to demolish the Line East Building,

rebuilding it on the same footprint and to the same scale. Elevationally, the new building will seek to better relate to the levels, proportions and rhythms of the wider street scene, mediating between the traditional Crow’s Nest building on the one side and the contemporary INTO Pathway Centre on the other.

“Refurbishment of the Crow’s Nest Public House building will seek to retain and enhance the original features detailed above and in the Archaeological Building Recording. In addition, the development will provide an opportunity to ‘tidy up’ the rear elevations.”
