Our Perspective On Government plans for Home Based workers
Last week, the Government announced a new package of support for home based entrepreneurs. Figures suggest that 2.9 million home based businesses in the UK contribute £300 billion to the economy with around 70% of all new businesses starting off in the home.
This support package will include new legislation which will make it easier for people to run a business from a rented home. An update to current legislation will mean that planning permission may no longer be needed to run a business from your own home and finally, new business rates guidance clarifies that in the majority of circumstances, home based businesses will not attract business rates.
As one in 10 domestic properties are now home to at least one business, we feel that anything that helps and supports people who work from home is great. However, in the days of modern technology, we shouldn’t forget that businesses are often not run solely from home but from local coffee shops, vans and hot desks.
