Royal award for Cumbria’s Theatre by the Lake

The Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria will attend a special ceremony to present Theatre by the Lake ‘Front of House’ Volunteers with The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service 2014.

The prestigious UK National Honour is the MBE for groups of volunteers who work in their local community for the benefit of others. It sets the national benchmark for excellence in volunteering, with the work of those awarded judged to be of the highest standard.

Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria Claire Hensman is presenting an exclusive commemorative crystal alongside a certificate signed by Her Majesty, in recognition of their outstanding contribution.

Mrs Hensman said, “I am delighted to be making this presentation to Theatre by the Lake ‘Front of House’ Volunteers on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen in recognition of their remarkable contribution to the community in Keswick and to the sustainability of this wonderful theatre which enriches the culture of the area and brings in many visitors who in turn boost the local economy. I do congratulate them. A group has to be exceptional to win the award.”

“Our volunteers are immensely hard-working, loyal and dedicated,” said Mary Elliott, Theatre by the Lake’s House Manager. Mary is responsible for recruiting, training and managing the team.

“They are essential to the running of the theatre and have made a huge contribution to its success over the last 15 years. We just could not manage without them and it is simply fantastic that their contribution has been recognised in this way.”

The group was one of 111 winners across the country to receive the Honour for 2014. Twelve groups from Cumbria have now won The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service since it was created by Her Majesty to mark the occasion of Her Golden Jubilee in 2002.
