Donation brings brain charity’s sensory facility to life
A brain injury charity from Chester has cut the ribbon on a brand new sensory area to help improve the lives of its patients.
The Brain Injury Rehabilitation & Development (BIRD) charity in Eccleston used a £4,000 donation from the MBNA Foundation to build a new treatment room, which includes soft play walls, noise boards and coloured play shapes.
The facility has been designed specifically to help patients that were born with learning difficulties or have sustained brain injuries, develop their hand and eye co-ordination, improve their reflexes and enhance their development.
Michael Walsh, Recovery Operations Unit Lead at MBNA, said: “BIRD is one of MBNA’s adopted charities, which means as a department we are committed to raising money and offering volunteer support for them every year.
“The launch of the MBNA Foundation in 2013 gave us the opportunity to apply for a grant and the charity has put the money to fantastic use by developing this dedicated sensory area.
“We’re really pleased that we could help and we hope the new room will provide support and comfort to people with learning difficulties and brain injuries for years to come.”
The BIRD donation is part of a £100,000 investment by the MBNA Foundation to support the work of charities across the North West and North Wales.
Helen Schielke, Charity Manager for BIRD, said: “As a charity, we rely solely on voluntary contributions, so on behalf of BIRD, I’d like to thank MBNA for their fantastic support without which we could never have completed this project.
“The new sensory room will significantly improve the lives of our patients. People living with brain injuries and learning difficulties can really benefit from sensory activities and now we can offer people across the region a completely different option to help with their rehabilitation.”
