Work begins on £25 million student accommodation in Liverpool

Work has begun on a new £25 million student accommodation scheme in Liverpool city centre, after it was acquired by developer Worthington Properties.

Philharmonic Court, situated off Catharine Street, will deliver 354 student rooms for the University in clusters of four to six bedrooms over four to five floors, with a private courtyard for students.

Worthington Properties has already demolished five outdated student blocks at the site and is well underway with laying the foundations for the new build. The steelwork is due to begin before the end of September.

A new pedestrian route linking Caledonia Street to Falkner Street will also be created, reinstating the historic pattern of the area and creating a green edge around the buildings.

The development is being funded by Santander and is the second scheme Worthington Properties has brought forward in partnership with The University of Liverpool. The first, Dover Court on Great Newton Street, will deliver a further 267 student rooms and will be completed in September.

Yvonne Edwards, relationship director, real estate finance at Santander said: “The expertise of Worthington Properties in the development of high quality student accommodation has enabled us to work together to fund a number of projects to date.

“The location and design of the scheme are first class and I look forward to seeing the development progress in readiness for September 2015.”

Russell Worthington, development director of Worthington Properties, said: “The scheme has been developed with the preferences of the modern student in mind and will improve the urban environment.

“We’re looking forward to seeing the development take shape and are proud to be working in partnership with the University once again.

“This is also the fourth time we’ve worked with Santander on a student scheme and it’s a strong funding partnership which supports our overall business strategy.”

The Philharmonic Court development is scheduled for completion in August 2015.
