AEC Industry Growth in 2015 - Predicts shortages and availability of skilled workers
A survey conducted by McGraw-Hill Construction (MHC) forecasts that in 2015 construction (nonresidential) projects will grow 73% over 2011 levels. Survey results predict that rapid level of growth has serious implications for the availability of skilled workers due to:
- Retiring Workers - With the baby boomer generation now approaching retirement age, 60% of survey respondent are concerned about the resulting loss of knowledge.
- Impact of the recession - Unemployment levels at double the national average (US) have driven many workers in design and construction to seek other opportunities in other industries - 58% are concerned about the resulting loss of experience and skills.
- Pipeline of new workers is not sufficient - 79% of US architect practitioners are unsure whether the student pipeline will be sufficient to prevent shortages.
- Global Demand- 78% of students and graduates are interested in working abroad resulting in all AEC firms competing for the same highly skilled resource pool.
- Lack of Industry Appeal - 62% believe that their trade is not appealing.
- Inadequate Job Ready Training - More than half - 56% find the education of the next generation inadequate.
The Need For Company-Wide BIM Training Initiatives
To address these issues, senior executives need to be more engaged and supportive of their companies training initiatives. Organizations need to make sure that training programs are leveraging the skills of experienced workers while attracting and retaining new talent. Training and HR departments need to collaborate to deliver a company-wide training program focused on delivering the highest level of industry knowledge to their workforce. Subject matter experts need to be freed up to be project specialists, coaches and mentors (focused on delivering BIM Level 2 & 3 mentoring) while incorporating a training program that will entice and appeal to a pipeline of new workers and fill gaps in current education.
