Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No it’s Santa dashing across Liverpool

A group of 10 Santas with a head for heights have been dashing over the heads of shoppers in Liverpool city centre as the UK’s biggest festive fun run draws near.

The Saint Nics were dressed in full Santa suits as they took to the 100ft high Liverpool Wire on Church Street to remind the public about the milestone 10th anniversary of the BTR Liverpool Santa Dash 5K.

The 1,000ft long Liverpool Wire, which sees zippers reach speeds of up to 40mph, is operated by Mellors Group Events and hosted by City Central BID.

The 11th annual fun run takes place on Sunday, 7 December, starting at 9.30am from the city’s Pier Head waterfront – and entries are now officially open.

The BTR Liverpool Santa Dash grows in popularity each year, with people using the event to kick-start their festivities.

BTR Race Director Alan Rothwell commented:

“The Liverpool Wire is a fun and exciting way to remind people that the 10th anniversary BTR Liverpool Santa Dash is well on its way. The Santa Dash is a real spectacle, just like The Liverpool Wire, so what better sight than to see 10 Santas flying over the heads of shoppers and tourists.

“People walk round with a big smile as soon as they put that Santa suit on to take part in the Dash – and the zipping Santas are sure to bring a lot of laughter and the feel-good factor to the city.”

In recent years, Liverpool and Las Vegas have enjoyed friendly Santa banter as to who attracts the most participants to take an unofficial title.

Last year, Liverpool’s event attracted 10,299 participants, but was narrowly beaten by the Las Vegas Great Santa Run who had an extra 902 Santas to win the 2013 battle.

Liverpool last took the honours in 2010, but organisers BTR Liverpool are determined to win it back during the event’s milestone 10th anniversary year.

Earlier this year, the BTR Liverpool Santa Dash was recognised nationally when it was named as Best Fun Run runner-up in The Running Awards 2014, in a category of 12 finalists.

Entries are now open the 2014 BTR Liverpool Santa Dash and 1K Mini Dash. Participants are provided with a full Santa suit, and blue Santa suits are limited to just 500. All finishers receive a commemorative medal. There is an early bird price before 8 November.
