Market-leading ‘Movers and shakers’ share their expertise at North East seminar

‘Inspiring Entrepreneurs’ event broadcasts live this September into Newcastle City Library

Entrepreneurs from the worlds of digital, beauty and food, who have launched intuitive and market-leading companies, will be sharing their secrets of success with North East business leaders at a free event next week.

On Monday 22 September, three speakers will participate in a live webcast from the British Library in London in which they’ll discuss their first-hand experiences of starting up innovative businesses and growing them into the global brands they are today.

The ‘Movers and Shakers’ seminar is the latest in a series of ‘Inspiring Entrepreneurs’ events. Organised by the Business & IP Centre National Network, in partnership with the British Library and Barclays, it is designed to motivate ambitious business owners and help them to learn from the experiences of ‘role model’ entrepreneurs.

Michael Acton-Smith OBE, creative director and founder of tech start-up turned entertainment firm Mind Candy, is one of the three entrepreneurs on the guest panel.

Michael’s company created the global kids hit Moshi Monsters, which has over 80 million registered users online and has now expanded into books, toys, music, trading cards, video games and a theatrical movie.

Joining Michael on stage will be Blink Brow Bar founder, Vanita Parti; the pioneer of the walk-in eyebrow bar, cited as largely responsible for bringing the ancient technique of threading into the 21st century.

Sam Bompas from Bompas & Parr is the third speaker joining Vanita and Michael. He is co-founder of the contemporary foodsmith, which crafts edible decorations and architectural installations out of jelly.

Together the three business leaders will participate in a live discussion with an interactive Q&A session for audience members from across the country to take part in.

The seminar will be held at the British Library in London and webcast live to six libraries across the country, including Newcastle’s City Library where the Business & IP Centre Newcastle is based.

Before the webcast starts, North East entrepreneurs Paul Rawlings and Sam Morton, from digital company Screach will give their presentation in-person to the Newcastle audience, discussing how they have continually grown and adapted their business proposition in-line with market demands and technology trends.

Rawlings founded ScreenReach Interactive and created the Screach product from his experience in digital signage and interactive technology. He started out creating EPOS, sales order processing and marketing systems for businesses including Burger King and Dixons. In 2009 he built Twitter-based businesses, including Twe2, a free SMS provider for Twitter that sold privately in the same year, and a social auction website Tweba.

The free event takes place on Monday 22September, from 5.45-9pm, at the Business & IP Centre Newcastle, Bewick Hall, City Library level 2. To register visit the events page of the BIPC website.

The Partnership delivering the Business & IP Centre Newcastle is made up of Newcastle City Council, Newcastle Science City, Northumbria University and the British Library, with support from the European Regional Development Fund.
