York Handmade strikes gold
~~The York Handmade Brick Company, the largest independent brickmaker in the north of England, has played a pivotal role in creating an award-winning garden at the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show.
The Alne-based company provided bricks and pavers for The Artisan Mosaic Garden, designed by David James of Olicana Mosaics, which won a Gold Award.
David James explained: “I enjoy working in a number of natural mediums and really like the unique character of the York Handmade’s genuine handmade bricks. They complement the other materials which which I work”.
“This is the second time I have worked with York Handmade Brick to create Gold award-winning displays. The first time was at the Harrogate Spring Flower Show 2014. “For the Artisan Mosaic show garden, the texture and warmth of the York Handmade’s light Thirkleby bricks fitted the Mediterranean theme perfectly. Laying the bricks in a herringbone pattern created the illusion of space and complemented the central pebble pavement. He added: “When I designed the show garden, I wanted to work with the highest quality local materials and craftspeople. The team at York Handmade Brick not only provided the product, but the service to match”. David Armitage, the chairman and managing director of York Handmade, commented: “We were absolutely delighted to play our part in the success of The Artisan Mosaic Garden at the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show.
“The splendid garden caused quite a stir, with BBC Look North and BBC Breakfast broadcasting from there. This was our second award-winning collaboration with Olicana Mosaics and we hope there will be an opportunity to complete a hat-trick in the not-so-distant future,” said Mr Armitage.
