Regina to bring back England to Denmark service

The Regina Line has announced it will bring back a ferry service between England and Denmark after its rival pulled out earlier this year.

DFDS said it could not make the route pay and its last ferry left the Essex port of Harwich for Esbjerg, Denmark, on Sunday night.

Niels Smedegaard, CEO of DFDS said: “Unfortunately we haven’t been able to reduce costs enough to enable the route to bear the very high additional costs of around £2 million a year,”

“This is what the new environmental law and the requirement to use low-sulphur oil will cost, based on current oil prices from 1 January 2015.”

The Regina Line plans to start the same service from Harwich next Easter.

Regina said “it was not a large company with many unnecessary employees” and it would be able to offer discounts.

Passenger numbers on the route fell from 300,000 a year at their peak to 80,000.
