Durham firm wins £1.5 million contract to regenerate Amble village

A County Durham construction firm has won a £1.5 million contract to help turn a North East town into a seafood tourist destination.

NCS, based in Chester le Street, will play an instrumental part in the regeneration of Amble, in Northumberland, by creating a new small business village on the harbour.

The project has been drawn up by Northumberland County Council in partnership with Arch, the Northumberland Development Company, Amble Development Trust, Amble Town Council, business representatives and the wider community of Amble.

NCS will be building 15 new retail pods, a seafood centre and creating a waterside promenade.

NCS, which was established in 2002, has more than 60 employees and undertakes projects across the country in areas such as education, sport and leisure, community and amenity, heritage and care, civil engineering work, manufacturing facilities and process infrastructure.

Recent projects include completing a major programme of refurbishment of Newcastle’s medieval Black Gate, refurbishment of the Edinburgh Building at the University of Sunderland and the refurbishment and extension of Hotspur School, in Newcastle.

The firm will also be building a new home and storage for the community based water sports centre, Coquet Shorebase Trust, at Druridge Bay Country Park, and carrying out associated civil engineering works.

Work has already started on the 31 week scheme.

NCS director, Sean Anderson, said:

“This is a very rewarding project to be working on as it will make a real difference to Amble by helping to create new jobs and attract visitors from afar.

“As a contract it also demonstrates our breadth of capability as it comprises both our building and civil engineering expertise.”
