Science Central shortlisted for two property awards at MIPIM UK

Science Central, a 24-acre mixed-use development in the heart of Newcastle city centre, has been shortlisted for two prestigious awards at the inaugural MIPIM UK and Estates Gazette Awards in London.

Forming part of MIPIM UK, the first major UK property event to showcase regeneration projects to investors and developers from around the world, the awards recognise contributions made to revitalising cities and towns across the UK.

A team of judges shortlisted the country’s best regeneration projects, acknowledging future projects, whilst paying tribute to the best schemes from the private rented sector.

Science Central is shortlisted for Regeneration Project of the Year for being a large-scale, mixed-use development, reshaping the urban environment. The Future Project Award recognises Science Central for being a visionary development with ambition to have a significant impact on the urban environment.

Delivered by Newcastle Science City, a partnership between Newcastle City Council and Newcastle University, Science Central is one of the biggest urban regeneration projects of its kind in the UK, a £250m redevelopment on the former Scottish and Newcastle brewery.

Leading the way in urban innovation and set to become an exemplar in sustainability, Science Central will attract leading edge scientific organisations to a mixed new community made up of educational, business, residential and leisure facilities.

The development has been shortlisted alongside major developments at Earls Court and Piccadilly Circus in London for the Regeneration Project of the Year category, and Dundee Waterfront and the 2014 Commonwealth Games venues in Glasgow for the Future Project Award.

Fiona Standfield, Director of Newcastle Science City commented: “We’re delighted that Science Central has been recognised in this way on such a prestigious national stage. The partnership has high ambitions for the development, so to be recognised both for our achievements so far, as well as our future ambitions is great news.”

Science Central will have a presence at MIPIM UK alongside a regional delegation from the North East. A unique partnership including Invest North East, which combines Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside and Sunderland councils, and the North East Local Enterprise Partnership (NELEP), are coming together for the very first time with twelve private sector partners, including Science Central, to attend the event and showcase the best of what the North East has to offer investors and developers.

Paul Woolston, Chair of the North East LEP said: “This is a proud moment for Science Central and the North East. To be shortlisted for two awards alongside projects including the 2014 Commonwealth Games venues is a fantastic achievement.

“Science Central is a long-term project which will be delivered over the next 10-15 years, bringing more and better jobs to our region as businesses look increasingly to the North East as a competitive and skilled region to invest in. We wish the team at Science Central the best of luck.”

Winners will be announced during the second evening of the MIPIM UK conference which takes place at Excel London from 15-17th October.

Science Central and the North East delegation attending MIPIM UK can be found on stand number E31.
