Teenage Cancer charity puts its trust in hands of local law firm

Stars from across the country will be returning to Newcastle in December in support of an annual concert to raise money for the North East Teenage Cancer Trust.

The third ‘Christmas at the Cathedral’ concert will take place on Wednesday, December 17 at St Nicholas Cathedral in Newcastle and is once again being sponsored by law firm, Clarke Mairs, which has offices on Hood Street in the city centre.

The popular concert will include a range of celebrity performances alongside carols and readings to celebrate Christmas. Previous performers have included Auf Wiedershen Pet’s Tim Healy, Emmerdale’s Charlie Hardwick and Chelsea Halfpenny, Britain’s Got Talent winner Jai McDowall, XFactor finalist Amelia Lily, Blue Peter’s Helen Skelton, comedian and poet Kate Fox, BBC Radio Newcastle’s Charlie Charlton and Lindisfarne’s Billy Mitchell. The line up for this year’s show will be revealed later on in the year.

The concert will again be produced by Ray Laidlaw who, as well as being one of the founding members of the North East band Lindisfarne, also produces the bi-annual Sunday for Sammy concert and a number of other productions.

Ray Laidlaw said: “Without giving too much away we already have a number of well-known faces interested in performing at this year’s event. We have been well supported over the past two years and this year’s concert promises to be even better. Christmas at the Cathedral is becoming one of the most popular Christmas events in Newcastle.”

Newcastle law firm, Clarke Mairs has sponsored the event since its inception. Partner Tim Clarke, said: “We are delighted to be able to support Christmas at the Cathedral and the Teenage Cancer Trust again this year. It is a fantastic night that always brings so many people together in support of a very worthwhile cause. We hope our involvement with the Trust will grow each year to help raise money for both cancer units at the Freeman and RVI which help young people across the region.”

Teenage Cancer Trust is the only UK charity dedicated to improving the quality of life and chances of survival for the seven young people aged between 13 and 24 diagnosed with cancer every day. The charity build specialist units within NHS hospitals bringing young people together to be treated by teenage cancer experts in a place designed just for them. There are two of these specialists units right here in the North East.

Traditionally treated alongside children or elderly patients at the end of their lives, young people can feel extremely isolated during treatment, some never meeting another young person with cancer. Being treated alongside others their own age can make a huge difference to their whole experience. Teenage Cancer Trust also educates young people and health professionals about cancer to ensure a swift diagnosis and referral to specialist support. Cancer in young people is rare but we want young people to know the common signs and symptoms so they can seek medical advice if they are worried.

Jonathan Wallis, the chairman of the Teenage Cancer Trust North East Board and a partner at George F White, said: “Both Teenage Cancer Trust and the North East Fundraising Board are looking to develop long term relationships with local businesses and we are delighted that Clarke Mairs wishes to be our overall sponsor for the third year running.”
