High-profile clients boost payment cards firm to record start to financial year

Plastic Card Services (PCS) is celebrating its best ever start to a financial year, following a 40 per cent increase in turnover versus 2013.

The manufacturer of plastic cards and associated services which is headquartered in Macclesfield, Cheshire, has seen a dramatic increase in revenue in the first five months of its financial year (May to September), following a series of innovations across the business.

The business, which employs 51 people at Tytherington Business Park, personalises 2.4 million cards per week and has moved to 24-hour manufacturing operations.

It puts its successful start to the year down to contract wins from high profile clients, including the Health Lottery, Co-op Danmark and Premier Inn, growth of its export sales, and a focus on new product development.

Central to its innovation drive has been the development of the industry’s first RFID contactless card and ePassport shields designed to prevent personal and payment data being accidentally swiped from contactless cards.

This new, patented technology saw PCS pick up a number of new contracts, including a deal to manufacture the ONEID4u 18+ proof of age card for Cards4U.

Managing director, Rob Nicholls, said: “As a business, we’ve always focused on innovation, whether that’s moving into new geographical markets or sectors, R&D or simply doing things more efficiently.

“By doing this, we successfully bucked the trend during the recession, posting year on year growth, but now there’s more positivity in the market, we’re really coming into our own.

“We’ve developed a growing export business to Scandinavia, grown organically through repeat orders with our long-serving customers, and through new product development like our contactless card and ePassport shield, we’re in a strong position to provide a real solution to a growing problem for businesses and consumers.”

To complement its current growth, PCS has recently appointed four new sales and account handlers: John Willocks, Matt Belfield, Kimberley Wadsworth and Emily Donohoe.

Plastic Card Services (PCS) is the leading manufacturer and innovator of plastic cards and associated services for household name brands both in the UK and internationally.
