Maersk Training’s Tony Greener returns to the waves for conference appearance

Maersk Training’s Tony Greener is heading offshore once more, after being asked to speak at a maritime conference with a difference.

Senior Maritime Instructor, Tony, is to make a presentation to delegates attending the Maritime Human Element Training in the EU conference which, fittingly, is being held on-board HQS Washington at its mooring on London’s Thames Embankment. His second speaking engagement in as many months, the conference takes place on Friday 21st November, with Tony once again sharing his expertise on the human elements of resource management.

The thirty minute presentation will be similar in content to the speech that Tony delivered at this year’s Kongsberg Maritime User Conference, which took place at the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead in September. Whereas that event focused on the role of simulators in staff training, the MHET conference has been established by the International Association of Marine Institutions (IAMI) and IMarEST, the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology, to review and assess current training standards, in particular, the Human Element Leadership and Management (HELM) course.

Tony joined Maersk Training in 2012 having spent over 35 years in the Maritime industry, with the last 16 years in a management role ashore as a Technical Manager of a large Fleet. It’s this wealth of first-hand experience that he will be bringing to the podium when he steps up to discuss the inestimable importance of proper staff training, and asking questions of the present training format.

Tony, said: “The aviation industry and airlines have been much better at learning from their mistakes than the maritime sector; if there’s an airline incident then the causes are spotted and the lessons are learned very quickly. The maritime industry has lagged behind this highly proactive approach.

The HELM course is an important part of industry training, as it is now mandatory for all officers, but the questions that need asking are whether it’s working effectively and if it needs improvement, and that’s why events like the Maritime Human Element Training conference are so important to the industry.“

Drawing from examples throughout history, from the sinking of the Titanic and the Costa Concordia disaster in 2012, Tony’s presentation proved popular at September’s Kongsberg conference and it’s a subject he is always willing to speak on.

“I’m always pleased to share my views on the human element, especially if it means potential improvements in standards. I am delighted to be asked by IAMI’s secretary, Gary Hindmarch, Principle of South Tyneside College’s Marine School (which Maersk Training has close links with) to speak at their upcoming London conference.

“Safety and the proper training of seafarers is obviously a huge issue for organisations such as IAMI and IMarEST and it’s a subject that is in constant need of evaluating and redefining.”

The one day conference has an impressive array of speakers lined-up, with representatives from Wrightway Training Services, CSMART centre for simulator maritime training and several international Universities all confirmed to be delivering presentations.
