Work begins on Gorton’s new National Speedway Stadium following £11 million investment

Work has started on the new National Speedway Stadium at the centre of the £11 million Belle Vue sports village, which will also bring national basketball centre and two football pitches to east Manchester

The village, off Kirkmanshulme Lane, Gorton, will include a 6,000-capacity speedway stadium, a national basketball centre and two state-of-the-art 3G football pitches, according to MEN.

It is hoped the centre will not only be home to Belle Vue Aces but will also host speedway Grand Prix as well as international basketball events.

The project received planning permission approval on 11 September. It is expected the entire project will be completed in early Spring 2016.

David Gordon, CEO of Belle Vue Aces, said: “After years of hard work and patience, we are absolutely delighted to see the builders moving equipment onto the site.

“Because of the scale of the development the setup will take approximately 4-6 weeks, but that’s something all large projects have to adhere to and this has been factored into the overall timescale of the build.

“It will enable the contractors to do what they need to do in the most efficient manner, so that we will have a stadium worthy of its national status.”

Chief operations officer Chris Morton said: “Belle Vue Speedway will have its own marketing office on site and once it’s up and running, we’ll be inviting fans nationwide to drop in and see us.

“Detailed plans and tech specs of the project will be on display in the office, while representatives of the club will be on hand to discuss the many commercial opportunities the stadium will offer.

“This is history in the making, and we want the fans to be a part of it with us.”
