Gentoo Construction win £7 million contract to boost development of Ashington town centre

Gentoo Construction has been appointed principal contractor on behalf of Bernicia to build residential properties and an elderly apartment scheme on the site of the former Ashington Hospital.

The site which has stood unused for over a decade will see a 40 sheltered living apartment building with communal living facilities and 26 sheltered living bungalows, complete with road and car parking infrastructure, private gardens and soft landscaping.

Allan Thompson, managing director of Gentoo Construction said: “We are delighted to be working with Bernicia again on a project that is a significant development for the Ashington community.

“We look forward to being a part of this regeneration project and will work with Bernicia to maximise the supply chain opportunities in this area.”

John Johnston, deputy group chief executive at Bernicia said: “Bernicia has developed plans for this site with our partners, Northumberland County Council and the Homes and Communities Agency and we are delighted to be delivering this much needed high quality accommodation whilst also contributing to the regeneration of Ashington town centre.

This investment highlights our continued commitment to regenerating areas of the North East with quality homes and services that make a real difference to local people and we look forward to working with Gentoo on this project.“

The development is part of a wider £13 million investment from Bernicia to regenerate this area of Ashington.
