North East trekker publishes Inca Trail tale for charity

A North East trekker has published a book to help encourage others to take up a charity challenge.

‘On Foot to Machu Picchu – a duff trekker’s adventure along an Inca Trail’ charts the ups and downs Sharon McKee, from Seghill, faced as she went on her first charity trek.

Although she loves exploring new places Sharon is not a fan of camping and prefers home comforts like hot running water and toilets. After being diagnosed with breast cancer though she was inspired to do a charity trek to Machu Picchu for Breast Cancer Care, which turned out to be a challenge in more ways than one.

Sharon says, “I’d never thought of doing anything like this before, and had lots of worries, from the physical challenge to sharing such an extreme experience with an all female group of 15 strangers.

There were lots of ups and downs, from being affected by the high altitude to finding friends in the most extreme circumstances, but it was an incredible experience and we raised over £50,000 - I am so glad that I did it. On Foot to Machu Picchu isn’t a glossy travel guide – but a warts and all personal tale of what it was like for an inexperienced and unlikely trekker. There are lots of references to things that didn’t go according to plan - and toilets! I hope the book might inspire others who, like I did, might feel a bit wary, to just sign up and do it. It is an amazing adventure – and one I’d recommend anyone to do.“

A donation from the ebook’s sales will go to Breast Cancer Care.
