Quantum Pharmaceutical Group’s pedal power boosts charity’s funds
Two cycling enthusiasts from the County Durham based Quantum Pharmaceutical Group, a leading manufacturer and supplier of niche medicines and services to the healthcare sector have completed the toughest race of their lives in an effort to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care.
Keen cyclist, Andy Matthews who is based at the Group’s County Durham headquarters and his Quantum colleague Mike Barker completed the 60 mile Etape Pennines race after a special training ride with triple jump world record holder Jonathan Edwards and Olympic cyclist Steven Burke.
London 2012 velodrome gold medallist Steven Burke led the group on a practice run at Barnard Castle in County Durham and Andy also had a chance to gain tips from him on gear changes, nutrition, climbs, descents and riding in pelotons.
“It was great to get an insight into the sportsmen’s approach to training and they really helped me understand different techniques required for a route like this. Steven showed me how to build strength and pace on climbs,” said Andy, Operations Director at the Quantum Pharmaceutical Group.
After counting up the funds, Andy and team announced a grand total of £1,300 which will be donated to Marie Curie Cancer Care, the charity which provides practical care and support to people with terminal illnesses.
