Martin-Brooks equips trainees for life on the tiles

Three young tradesmen from Sheffield roofing specialists, Martin-Brooks, are heading back to the classroom to convert what they learn on site into formal qualifications.

With help from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), Martin-Brooks has sourced suitable courses for its trio of trainees in joinery and roof slating and tiling.

Jamie Heritage (18) is embarking on a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) level two in joinery at Sheffield College. He is currently learning his trade alongside father, Roy, one of Martin-Brooks’ existing joiners, whose skills are a necessary element of work on loft conversions and roof trusses, etc.

Jay Higgins and Alexander Fearn, both 21, are studying a slating and tiling apprenticeship at Leeds College of Building. The two year course will equip the pair with a NVQ level two covering the range of work undertaken by Martin-Brooks, from small domestic repairs to the installation of a new roof. Like Jamie, Jay is also learning his trade alongside father, Martin.

All three youngsters have worked at the firm for 12 months and will be granted block release to complete the theoretical element of their training. As there is no specific course for roofing joinery in the UK, Martin-Brooks is participating in a reciprocal arrangement with Kier, organised by the CITB, to provide one of its students with roofing experience, in exchange for assistance with the elements of Jamie’s course that are outside his current role.

Having the time and encouragement to seek formal qualifications will make all three more rounded individuals with a greater breadth of knowledge that will ultimately reflect in the quality finish we produce.”
