Beauty student ready to set sail

A Derwentside College student is taking her beauty therapy skills to sea after securing a place on a luxury cruise liner.

Frances Boyle, 19 from Consett, will work in the spa on board a cruise ship, which will sail to exotic tropical destinations in the Bahamas and Caribbean.

After completing a level two diploma in Beauty Therapy at Derwentside College, Frances progressed on to the level three diploma in Body & Spa Therapy which provided her with the skills and experience required to join the prestigious Steiner Training Academy in London.

Steiner has operated spas and salons at sea for more than 50 years and employs more than 2,000 spa professionals each year.

The elite Steiner Training Academy recruits from all over the world including; the UK, Eastern and Western Europe, Asia, South Africa, Australia and the USA and works with prestigious cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, Cunard, P&O and the Disney Cruise Line.

Frances said: “I chose to study at Derwentside College because of its personalised and friendly approach to students. I felt happy there from the day I attended an open evening. As part of my level three diploma I secured a work placement at a local beauty salon, which later developed into a part-time job and really boosted my confidence and furthered my knowledge in the industry.

“I had always known that my long-term career plan was to work for Steiner so I could see the world while doing a job I love, so I was determined to succeed at the interview for the Steiner Academy.

“The interview process was extremely tough but I felt really well prepared due to the skills I’ve acquired at College and thanks to the fantastic support from my course leaders. I had to demonstrate my practical abilities, communication and presentation skills, as well as a genuine passion for the industry.

“I was so thrilled to learn I had secured a place and would soon be leaving Consett to embark on my dream career.”

Nicola Scheel, course tutor for Beauty Therapy added: “Since Frances began studying at Derwentside College we’ve seen her develop into an outstanding young professional who has faced challenges head on. She has proved to be a very determined and focused individual.

“The staff were delighted to receive the phone call from Frances informing us of her interview success and are looking forward to seeing how her exciting career at sea develops.
