Gus Robinson Developments achieves highest honour for health and safety

A North East construction firm has been awarded one of the country’s highest honours in recognition of its exemplary health and safety record.

Gus Robinson Developments has received the prestigious President’s Award from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).

Only a handful of organisations receive the honour each year which recognises 10 consecutive years of achieving RoSPA’s gold standard for occupational health and safety.

Michelle Boylan, Health, Safety, Quality and Environmental (HSQE) Advisor at Hartlepool-based Gus Robinson Developments, said: “To win RoSPA’s President’s Award is an incredible achievement and speaks volumes of the health and safety culture within the company.

“The award is seen as the pinnacle within occupational health and safety and the standard for other companies to aspire towards. For a company of our size to receive the award is a great honour as usually the recipients are big multi-national businesses.”

To be eligible for the President’s Award, Gus Robinson Developments had to submit detailed evidence of its site work, risk assessment processes, staff and its overall health and safety record. The firm delivers construction projects for private and public sector clients across the North East with a particular focus on providing affordable housing and community facilities.

Judges considered the firm’s overarching occupational health and safety management systems, including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement.

Dating back 58 years, the RoSPA Awards scheme is the largest and longest running programme of its kind in the UK. It recognises commitment to accident and ill health prevention and is open to businesses and organisations of all types from across the UK and overseas.

David Rawlins, RoSPA’s awards manager, said: “The RoSPA Awards encourage the raising of occupational health and safety standards across the board. We offer Gus Robinson Developments our congratulations for contributing to a collective raising of the bar for other organisations to aspire to.”

Past recipients of the President’s Award include Amec, Heerema, Shell Gannet Alpha and Morrisons.

Michelle added: “Securing the President’s Award elevates us to the level of some esteemed UK and international businesses. But after a decade of success and a thorough commitment to health and safety, we have no intention of letting things slip; we will be doing everything we can to ensure our standards remain as high as they possibly can be.”
