New apprentices spearhead skills training at Newcastle’s CMR

A Newcastle-based engineering firm supplying global markets is investing further in young apprenticeship talent to secure its future workforce needs. CMR UK has linked-up with Tyne-Met College to train 16-year-old Thomas Young and 18-year-old Aaron Farrer, both from Cramlington, and Joseph Smiles, 18, from Tynemouth as they work towards gaining their Level 4 vocational qualification in advanced technical and engineering. The move comes as the company, one of the 50 fastest growing businesses in the North East, is seeing strong demand for its electrical wiring harnesses, monitoring and control systems from within the global CMR Group and international OEMs. These include many of the world’s leading manufacturers of high horsepower engines whose products are used to power marine vessels, mine haul trucks, trains and industrial equipment both onshore and offshore. The training the three youngsters will receive as part of their four year apprenticeship will see them gain an industry recognised qualification, which can pave the way for a successful career in the engineering sector. This is the latest initiative by CMR to recruit and develop a highly flexible workforce equipped to meet its future skills’ needs - previous engineering, finance and administration apprentices have passed through CMR’s doors on their way to careers with the firm. The firm is also working with schools such as Whitley Bay High School as part of a commitment to showcasing to school leavers the value of engineering as an interesting and rewarding career. Finance director Maureen Jamieson said the company is planning for future success, committing itself to adding value through employing apprentices as part of building a highly skilled workforce. “We’re delighted to have Thomas, Aaron and Joseph on-board and very excited about working with Tyne-Met to deliver the intensive and specialist apprenticeship training they need. “CMR is leading the way through the design and delivery of innovative, relevant and worthwhile training programmes that will guarantee that current and future sector skills’ needs are met and indeed surpassed.” Thomas Young said: “I’ve already learned many new skills in the few weeks that I’ve been with CMR. It’s really interesting and it’s definitely where I see my future career going. “I’m now on track for a rewarding and sustainable career that really suits my skills and abilities, while CMR is a good company to work for. I look forward to becoming fully qualified.”
