How renewable energy can contribute towards creating sustainable future cities
Creating sustainable future cities is a pressing issue that the government has been challenged with for several years. Many components contribute to this such as transportation, technology, infrastructure and employment opportunities. However, possibly the most pressing constituent of all is how to ensure a city sources and distributes its energy as cost-effectively and environmentally friendly as possible.
On the 18th of October 2014 Newcastle was named the most sustainable city in the UK for the second year in a row on the Sustainable Cities Index. This award highlights our regions success in achieving both economic security and environmental preservation, adding to the attractiveness of living in the North East.
Environmental impact was one of the main indicators that contributed to Newcastle obtaining the award. This area covered a range of factors including how the city sources its energy, pollution management and how the city is adapting for a sustainable future.
Companies such as the Gateshead-based Green Energy Consulting are working to continue this progress towards sustainability. This involves ensuring that as many local and national businesses as possible have the opportunity to reduce their carbon footprint and switch to carbon neutral energy sources.
Simple yet effective energy management techniques can be achieved by any company to help to promote a sustainable business future. These modifications are tailored to the individual businesses and can be as small as switching to energy saving light bulbs or as significant as converting to a renewable energy provider.
Each step a North East business takes towards becoming neutral is positive progress to creating a sustainable future for Newcastle. This therefore, would ensure that the city stays a desirable and community focused place to live.
