Business leaders learn of latest innovations in Internet services in North Wales at Conwy briefing

Industry leaders from across North Wales have heard how the latest innovations in digital infrastructure and communications services are helping to provide a significant boost to the region’s economy.

The ‘Faster, Better Future’ briefing, held in Conwy this week, showcased the range of business benefits available to Welsh businesses via a fibre-optic network in North Wales.

Delegates also heard how the region’s very own network is helping to attract investment, deliver economic regeneration and increase business’ productivity.

Deputy Minister for Skills and Technology Julie James opened the event by sharing the Welsh Government’s vision for supporting businesses through enhanced digital infrastructure.

Claire Bayley, digital infrastructure expert and project director for fibre network operator FibreSpeed, also discussed the innovative range of technologies available to businesses by connecting to a fibre network.

Attendees included representatives from North Wales local authorities, the Federation of Small Businesses and Institute of Directors.

Six independent network providers also shared their knowledge and expertise on products and services, available through a fibre connection that can help the region’s businesses grow.

Claire Bayley said: “Access to fast, reliable data connectivity has levelled the playing field for businesses competing with the big cities and traditional hubs of industry across the border.

“It’s particularly pertinent for the hundreds of growing businesses across North Wales that could be given a significant boost by access to reliable digital communications networks.

“Investment in North Wales’ digital infrastructure provides a range of tangible benefits for the region’s larger businesses. Adopting VoIP technologies, removing servers, using the cloud to host applications and establishing dedicated, reliable private networks all have a positive impact on businesses’ productivity.

“There are also significant ways that SMEs can benefit too, with social media, online marketing and e-commerce providing game-changing advantages for developing businesses.

“Investment in digital communications is an invaluable way to make significant improvements to businesses across all sectors in North Wales.”

Deputy Minister Julie James AM said: “It is encouraging to see how the FibreSpeed network has developed over the past five years and is a credit to all involved.

“It provides fast, reliable telecommunications links across North Wales from Holyhead to Wrexham. It is an integral part of the telecommunications supply chain in Wales, ensuring that North Wales is connected to the digital economy.

“Since becoming live it has provided high speed broadband across 12 industrial estates and business parks.

“I am sure that FibreSpeed will continue to build on its current success and not only support our Welsh businesses and telecoms sector, but will continue to contribute to the Welsh Government’s digital agenda.”

FibreSpeed, based in St Asaph, recently completed a significant upgrade of its network, which allows businesses to access fast, reliable digital communications services.

The FibreSpeed network, an open access, wholesale optical fibre network, is currently used by approximately 350 businesses and more than 1,800 households across North Wales, supplied via 12 independent network service partners.

The event, which also marked the fifth anniversary of the launch of the FibreSpeed network’s operations, took place at the Quay Hotel & Spa, Deganwy.

FibreSpeed is part of the Welsh Government’s Digital Wales programme, supporting economic development in North Wales.
