Construction team helps Holyhead school get back on their bikes

Workers constructing the Holyhead Truck Stop development have helped pupils at a local school get back on their bikes by re-laying their playground.

Site workers from civil engineering firm Jones Bros visited Ysgol Kingsland over the half-term break to resurface the school playground and improve security at the school allotment by putting up a new fence.

The works have been paid for by the truck stop developers, RoadKing Holyhead Ltd, a joint venture between The Conygar Investment Company PLC and Fred Done of BETFRED.

Jones Bros has been working on the £6m transport hub on behalf of Conygar Investment Company and Road King, which is part-backed by betting magnate Fred Done.

Tristan Roberts, headteacher at Ysgol Kingsland, said: “We extended the yard space available for our nursery classes about five or six years ago, with the help of a team of volunteers.

“Unfortunately, due to wear and tear it’s become pretty untidy since then, and wasn’t really suitable for the children to use – it was impossible for them to ride bikes and scooters for example.

“We’ve also had problems with vandals recently, who over the summer holiday destroyed the children’s garden and allotment area.

“Fortunately, the town council put us in touch with the team working on the truckstop, who kindly offered to relay the surface and secure the allotment by putting up a new, improved fence.

“The work will make a huge difference to the school and the pupils, who can now get back on their bikes, and we can’t thank them enough for their generosity.”

Jones Bros has been carrying out surfacing work on the development, which is located on the Parc Cybi business park, since May. The 200 parking bay transport hub will serve the thousands of hauliers that use Holyhead port to travel to and from Ireland every year.

Nick Whatmore, Director of RoadKing stated “We are delighted to be able to help Ysgol Kingsland in this way and will be working closely with the local community to make a success of the truck stop to the benefit of the local economy.

Jones Bros’ work on the project includes constructing 22,000m2 of hardstanding and the construction of 278 Works access points into the site. Since work began, contracts worth more than £750,000 have been awarded by Jones Bros to Anglesey businesses supplying the development.

Jones Bros project manager Hefin Lloyd-Davies: “It was no trouble at all for us to carry out the work on RoadKing’s behalf at the school, which is only a short distance from the truck stop site.

“Work has progressed well so far, and it’s great to be able to make a contribution to the local community alongside our work on site.”

Founded in the 1950s and employing almost 300 people, Jones Bros has grown rapidly in the last decade. It is currently working on contracts in various sectors including the construction of waste management facilities, highways, flood and marine defence and renewable energy projects around the UK.
