School site visit inspires future housebuilders

A group of Year One pupils from Dame Bradbury’s School have been discovering more about the construction industry thanks to an in depth look at a development in Saffron Walden.

The students, aged 5 and 6, visited Persimmon Homes’ new housing development, Tudor Park off De Vigier Avenue, after studying the ‘Houses and Homes’ topic this term.

They have looked at how buildings are constructed, as well as designing and making a room in a shoe-box.

The children had a wonderful time, wearing safety helmets and high visibility jackets. They enjoyed being shown around by Persimmon sales executive Lynne Lawson and had a question and answer session with building site manager, John Maitland.

During their visit, they were allowed into a partially completed house and compared it to the finished show home, commenting on the way the children’s bedrooms were decorated.

Mrs Brassington, head of Design Technology and Art at Dame B’s, who taught the interior design project and accompanied the children on the visit, said, “The pupils were very excited by everything they saw. I hope it may have inspired future architects, interior designers and engineers.”

Persimmon Homes site manager John Maitland added: “It was a pleasure to host the school visit and show the pupils around the site. They were all very enthusiastic and enjoyed seeing the way houses are constructed. I hope we have inspired a few homeowners of the future to also think of a career in the construction and housing industries.
