Yorkshire Chambers of Commerce back £15 billion One North plan

Six Chambers of Commerce, including three Yorkshire Chambers, and representing more than 12,000 businesses, have told the Chancellor the One North plan put forward by five local authorities earlier this year.

The letter of support written to George Osborne was signed by the chief executives of Hull and Humber Chamber of Commerce, the North East Chamber of Commerce, Liverpool & Sefton Chambers of Commerce, Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry and West and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce.

One North was launched in July by local authorities in Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool and Newcastle, with support from Hull, Bradford, Wakefield and York.

It calls on the Government to invest £15 billion over 15 years on projects including a high-speed transpennine link that would slash journey times between Leeds, Sheffield and Manchester.

It received a positive welcome from the Chancellor, who indicated he would respond to the proposals in his Autumn Statement, due on December 3.

The Chambers involved in producing this response represent businesses in the five cities involved in developing the One North plan.

The North of England contains substantial business and economic assets that should be maximised for the benefit of the whole of UK plc.
