New health and fitness club launched on Teesside

A personal trainer and one of his former customers have teamed up to launch a new health and fitness club on Teesside.

Phil Lamb, 36, and Gary Gibson, 42, are the driving forces behind Atom Health and Fitness Club at Wynyard Park.

Housed in a 5,500 sq ft unit within the 700-acre business park’s Business Village, the club aims to offer a range of high quality and innovative services in a sophisticated and luxurious setting. Nine new jobs are being created.

It is opening its doors over the weekend (November 28, 29 and 30) to give prospective members a chance to look around, and it will officially open for business on December 1.

Gary, an engineer from Durham who has taken on a non-executive director role, has become involved in the project after developing “a passion” for exercise over the last year.

“I was struggling to even run 200 yards a year ago but within a few months of beginning to work with Phil I was running 3-5 miles quite comfortably and at quite good speeds. I have lost a lot of weight and feel a lot healthier. Exercise has become a passion and through this venture both Phil and I aim to inspire others,” he said.

Phil, a personal trainer for nine years, lives in Sedgefield, County Durham, after re-locating to the North-East from Liverpool in 2012.

“The club is equipped with a wide range of top-end equipment and we have gone for a luxurious feel and finish. We want to help people enjoy exercise by bringing back a level of service that isn’t really available in most standard gyms. We will have high staffing levels, including a number of “experts”, which reflects our results-focussed approach,” he said.

One particular innovation is the provision of hot yoga sessions - a first for Teesside - which take place in a specially heated room. The club also had a specially-devised programme of high-intensity Xtraining exercise classes and a key element of its approach to fitness is to promote the importance of good nutrition. When the hard work is over, members can relax with a refreshing drink in a smoothie bar.

Claire Tallon, Facilities and Estates Manager at Wynyard Park, said: “We are delighted to welcome Atom Health and Fitness. It is a real boost to have such a high-quality health and fitness club based on our site, and I’m sure it will prove very popular with people who work here as well as residents from the surrounding area.”

Membership costs £49 per month, inclusive of all hot yoga classes and a full Xtraining class timetable. The first 100 members to sign-up will get a free PT session every month. Prospective members can join online. The club’s opening hours are 6.30am-9pm Monday-Friday, 10am-5pm on Saturdays and 10am-4pm on Sundays.
