South Tyneside £100 million regeneration moves forward as Shields Gazette offices demolished

The transformation of South Shields town centre has taken another step forward as demolition of a prominent building begins.

Bulldozers have moved in to start pulling down the former Shields Gazette offices, in Chapter Row.

The demolition is part of South Tyneside Council’s £100 million regeneration masterplan and will make way for new retail and leisure development.

Preparatory works and internal stripping of the three-storey building have been ongoing for several weeks.

Lead Member for Regeneration and Economy, Cllr John Anglin, said: “This is another step forward in our South Shields 365 masterplan.

“We’ve made a lot of progress over the last year and the momentum is continuing to build.

“We’ve already got the go ahead for the new Central Library and Digital Media Centre.

“Now we’re focusing on acquiring the land and properties we need and gaining the necessary planning permissions to secure the whole site.”

Demolition of the building, which dates back to 1910, is scheduled for completion by the end of January.
