Cloud computing: becoming the ordinary

In November, Perfect Image had the pleasure of flying out to Las Vegas. While it would be wrong to say it was all work and no play, we did of course, head state-side with good reason.

Each year internet giants, Amazon, hosts a conference called re:Invent, seeing people travel from across the globe to attend, and bringing Amazon Web Services (AWS) users of all skill levels to connect, collaborate and learn about true cloud solutions.

The scale of the event is huge; this year almost 14,000 people attended the conference with delegates from a range of different sectors and specialisms. The conference hall isn’t full of the stereotypical techies – of course IT professionals do attended, but there is also a whole host of other business professionals, clearly demonstrating that true cloud computing technologies have reached mainstream.

It’s fact – true cloud is no longer considered to be niche, with businesses across the world harnessing the benefits of this type of infrastructure; AWS offers flexible and scalable IT solutions in a safe and secure environment. So much so, even Coca-Cola’s IT infrastructure is a true cloud solution provided by AWS.

The quality of AWS’ clients is testament to the changing perception towards cloud technologies. No longer are people afraid of the cloud and choosing to place their servers in datacentres instead; AWS is so incredibly safe and secure even The Pentagon uses the service.

Naturally, Amazon and its sister companies such as LoveFilm use the platform too. Remember, this is the same Amazon that experienced its busiest day on record during this year’s Black Friday, seeing 5.5million goods sold online at an average of 64 items per second in just 24 hours, with the entire technical infrastructure powered by AWS’ true cloud solution.

The scalability of AWS meant that Amazon could scale up its computing power during online activity peaks and then scale it back down as the Black Friday flurry tailed off, all while only paying for the computing power they used during this period – no contracts and no capital outlay.

What stood out for us at re:Invent (despite the bright lights of Sin City) was the calibre of the line-up of speakers and presenters. Industry heavyweights such as PwC, Accenture and Gartner gave presentations independently endorsing AWS, using real-life case studies to illustrate how businesses have benefited from true cloud.

The conference, the speakers and case studies clearly show that while the benefits of true cloud computing is extraordinary, the technology is rapidly becoming ordinary; more and more companies – and not just the giant corporates like Coca-Cola – are recognising the business benefits of AWS. It’s most certainly the right time for businesses to invest in true cloud solutions.
