Sales up £174.1 million at Ocado despite supermarket wars

Hatfield-based grocery delivery company Ocado has reported gross group sales of £1.026 billion for the year ending 30th November 2014, compared to £852.4 million for the same period last year.

The group has seen significant growth in the last four months, reporting gross group sales of £331.9 million in the 16 weeks ending 30th November 2014, compared to £279.9 million for last year.

The group has reported an increase of gross retail sales of £40 million, hitting £311.4 million from £271 million during the same period.

Ocado has seen an increase in orders per week, from 152,000 to 177,000 compared to same 16 week period in 2013.

However, the average order size has reduced by 1.7% to £109.74 from £111.64.

Tim Steiner, Ocado’s chief executive Officer, said: “We are pleased with the continued steady growth in our business against the backdrop of a more competitive grocery market. This performance reflects an increasing number of customers who value the wide range of products, keen prices and great service made possible by Ocado’s unique operating model, and further demonstrates the ongoing shift to online grocery shopping.

“We remain committed to constantly improving the quality of the proposition to customers, which we believe will support continued growth, and although we anticipate the retail environment to remain challenging, we expect to continue growing sales slightly ahead of the online grocery market.”
