Shackletons design for dementia

Shackletons hired by York based Inclusion Housing to complete an extra care housing scheme in Sunderland specifically designed to accommodate people with Alzheimer’s and dementia.

The new build, called Seafarers Way, provides 38 one and two bedroom apartments for rent for people with long-term conditions that make living in their own home difficult, but who don’t want to move into a residential care home.

Aiding independent living Shackletons provided a full turn-key solution, from design, manufacture and installation of seating, bedroom, lounge and occasional furniture; looking after every aspect of what was needed to provide a fit for purpose and supportive extra care environment.

Each self-contained apartment provides a double bedroom, with shower room, fitted kitchen with access to communal areas, which include comfortable lounge areas, hairdressing salon, healthy living suite, restaurant/café and participation kitchen to encourage resident activity and reminiscence. Shackletons assisted with every aspect, right down to the cutlery needed and heritage artwork to encourage memory recall; conversation points and way finding.
