Liverpool student wins chance to represent UK

A Liverpool student has won the chance to represent the country in a global skills competition in Abu Dhabi.

Plastering student Jack Wilson won bronze in a the UK finals of a World Skills competition and could now be selected to represent the UK Worldwide.

The UK final took place at the Skills Show held at the Birmingham NEC. Each student is given a challenge which they can part prepare for before the event. Jack had to complete a series of plastering tasks showing a range of techniques.

Despite being only early on in his plastering apprenticeship, Jack beat off competition from more experienced plasterers to win third place with his freestyle work being a real talking point.

WorldSkills UK plays a vital role in raising standards, esteem and levels of expertise in further education, skills and Apprenticeships through competition activities and local initiatives.

Jack was one of three students from the college who made it to the UK heat of the WorldSkills final. Nail technology enhancement students Annahita Babataher and Alice Byrne also competed in the UK final.

Elaine Bowker, Principal of the City of Liverpool College said: “Very few students get the chance to compete on a national level in their chosen discipline and this is a great achievement for all of the students involved. Jack winning bronze in the competition is a huge result for him and for the college, particularly as he is only in the first year of his apprenticeship. Taking third place means that Jack now could be chosen to represent the UK in plastering during the global competition.”

On Jack’s short listing tutor Liam Buckley commented: “I could not have asked any more of Jack, he gave his all and managed to finish all tasks. The standard was very high, which makes his achievement even more remarkable, to see off challengers in an open age competition when Jack is only a first year apprentice. He truly will be one of the stars of our profession in the future.”
