Shane scoops student architectural award for LHL Group
AN East Yorkshire architectural technologist has scooped a top national design award for a project which formed part of his training.
Architectural technician at the Hull office of surveyors and architects, LHL Group, Shane York has won The Student Award for Excellence in Architectural Technology (Project) in annual awards run by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT).
Shane York, 27, who joined the LHL Group in 2006, won the award for a project which formed part of his final year studies at Sheffield Hallam University for a Bachelor of Science (BSc), Architectural Technology which he passed this summer.
The design project was to create a new property at Millhouse Park, near Sheffield City Centre, close to buildings dating from the 13th century. The design, for a building to be used to sell artisan foods to the local community, had to be sustainable, practical and commercially viable. He chose five main materials for the property including ashlar stone, glass, wood, zinc and steel to represent Sheffield’s industrial heritage.
In awarding him the first prize in the competition, open to students throughout the UK, the judges said: “Shane was able to present a solution that related well to the site utilising contours and maximising views and natural daylights. The Millhouse Works project is very well resolved aesthetically and technically with sound detailing and quality construction.”
His prize includes a trophy, a certificate, £750 and his CIAT membership automatically upgraded to associate.
Shane York says: “Being overall winner gives me great pride and belief in my abilities. I am extremely grateful for the award and to be able to achieve this goal as a student is fantastic. All my colleagues at LHL Group’s Hull office have been really supportive as this concept has grown.”
LHL Group director, Richard Hampshire, who manages the company’s Hull office in Hessle, says: “We like to employ young people and train them in our approach to our work. We are thrilled for Shane for whom this is a fantastic achievement and no doubt the start of a very successful career.”
The LHL Group, which works on a wide range of commercial, residential, industrial and heritage projects throughout the North, also has offices in York and Harrogate.
