Newcastle businesses urged to go superfast in 2015

Newcastle businesses are being urged to get 2015 off to a flying start with free vouchers worth up to £3,000 to get connected to the world via superfast broadband.

Retailers in Newcastle’s prestigious Eldon Garden shopping centre are already celebrating receiving the 100th Go Digital Newcastle voucher – which has boosted their connection from than10mbps to an amazing 300mbps.

And other SMEs, charities and social enterprises across Newcastle, Gateshead and North Tyneside are being encouraged to apply.

The free funding from Go Digital Newcastle is funded by the Government’s SuperConnected Cities programme, run by the city council.

Businesses can apply for themselves, and landlords can get multiple vouchers on behalf of their tenants.

Eldon Garden operations manager Dave Mains said: “We found out that as commercial landlords we could apply for a number of vouchers for our tenants across the whole centre.

“Retailers work hand-in-hand with online services and sales these days, so superfast broadband can be a real boost for business.”

State-of-the-art fibre broadband means businesses can reach their customers quickly, take internet orders and store their important data more safely.

As part of Go Digital Newcastle, businesses in the city can also apply for ERDF-funded business support including advice and workshops – and those who complete the programme can apply for a further £2,000 for IT equipment.

Cllr Michael Johnson, Newcastle City Council Deputy Cabinet Member for Skills, Business and Enterprise, said superfast broadband speeds can help futureproof retailers.

“We’re delighted the retailers in Eldon Gardens have joined the superfast revolution,” he said.

“The businesses in the shopping centre benefit and the landlord’s property is made even more attractive to new tenants.

“Customers coming to Eldon Garden to do their shopping will be able to enjoy the connectivity too – maybe checking their emails or browsing online while they’re having a cuppa.”

Eldon Garden teamed up with superfast broadband supplier Metronet (UK) to install the service via radio dish to minimise any disruption.

Digital Economy Minister Ed Vaizey welcomed the 100th connection voucher landmark for Newcastle.

He said: “World class connectivity is one of our top priorities – broadband in the UK is already regarded as being among the best in Europe.

“Our broadband connection voucher scheme is providing faster and more reliable internet access to thousands of businesses across the UK. There’s still time to apply, and I urge all eligible small businesses in Newcastle to do so right away.”
